Haqq Dawah Media Presents: Glad Tidings S2 E13 The Hadith of Angel Jabreel - Season Finale(Show Notes)

AsSalaam Alkuim,

Hadith 02: The Hadith of Jibreel

On the authority of Umar (r) who said: One day while we were sitting with the Messanger of Allah (s), there came before us a man with extremely white clothing and extremely black hair. There were no signs of travel on him and none of us knew him. He [came and] sat next to the Prophet (s). He supported his knees up against the knees of the Prophet (s) and put his hand on his thighs. He said, ‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’  The Messanger of Allah (s) said, ‘Islam is to testify that there is none worthy of worhsip except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messanger of Allah, to establish the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast [the month of] Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the House if you have the means to do so.’ He said, ‘You have spoken truthfully [or correctly].’ We were amazed that he asks the question and then says that he had spoken truthfully. He said, ‘Tell me about Imaan (faith).’ He [the Messanger of Allah (s)] responded, ‘It is to believe in Allah, His angles, His books, His messangers, the Last Day and to believe in the divine decree, [both] the good and the evil thereof.’ He said, ‘You have spoken truthfully.’ He said, ‘Tell me about al-Ihsaan (goodness).’ He [the Prophet (s)] answered, ‘It is that you worship Allah as if you see Him. And even though you do not see Him, [you know] He sees you.’ He said, ‘Tell me about [the time of] the Hour,’ He [the Prophet (s)] answered, ‘The one being asked does not know more than the one asking.’ He said, ‘Tell me about it’s signs.’ He answered, ‘The slave-girl shall give birth to her master, and you will see the barefooted, scantily-clothed, destitiute shepards competing in constructing lofty buildings.’ Then he went away. I stayed for a long time. Then he [the Prophet (s)] said, ‘O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Mesanger know best.’ He said, ‘It was [the angel] Gabriel who came to teach you your religion.’  (Recorded in Muslim)

Commentary Summary

Written commentary compiled by volunteers utilizing Sh. Jamaal Diwan's audio commentary above and English translation of Ibn Daqiq Al-Id's commentary on The Forty Hadith of Imam al-Nawawi.

The Significance of this Hadith

This hadith includes within it all outwardly actions and inwardly beliefs. The sciences of the Sharia’ return back to this hadith due to it encompassing knowledge of the Sunnah. Hence, some of the scholars have termed this hadith the Mother or Core of the Sunnah, just as Surah al-Fatiha has been termed the Mother or Core of the Qur'aan, due to it containing the entire Message of the Qur'an.
This hadith is also known as Hadith Jibreel (Angel Gabriel) (as). The hadith tells the story of Jibreel (as) when he came to the Prophet (sas), asking a set of questions. The Prophet (sas) responded to those questions and then addressed his companions. There is a door called “Baab Jibreel” at Masjid An-Nabawi in Madina. It is known as the door that Jibreel (as) came in to ask the Prophet (sas) these questions.

Awareness

It is very important for du’aat (Islamic workers ) to be aware of their surroundings, and to recognize what’s going on around them so they can act appropriately. Umar (ra) noticed that a well-kept individual with clean clothes, whom he didn’t know, entered the Masjid with no trace of travel on him. Umar (ra) was conscious; he could sense that this man was not an ordinary man, nor a man from “around town.”
The da’wah, the call to Islam, is very much predicated upon the building of relationships with people. The people who care about inviting others to Islam and spreading the deen of Allah (swt), should notice what’s going on around them. They should notice when someone new comes into the masjid. They should notice if someone is left out or if someone is sitting by him or herself. Then they can proceed from there in terms of figuring out how to deal with that situation. The call towards the deen of Allah is predicated upon brotherhood, sisterhood, love for the sake of Allah; and that requires paying attention to the situations of people around us.

Etiquette

Jibreel (as) came dressed in a very nice and clean way. He sat in front of the Prophet (pbuh) in a very respectful and humble way. There are many things that the scholars took from this Hadith in terms of seeking knowledge. Among the etiquettes of seeking knowledge is students should have decent apparel, they should look clean as much as possible. Moreover, they should show a high level of respect towards their teachers.

Outward Actions & Inward Beliefs

Jibreel (as) turns to the Prophet (sas) and says, “Tell me about Islam”. The Prophet’s answer was centered around outward actions. Then he asks him about iman and the Prophet’s answer focused on internal actions of belief and of thought.
Islam and iman are interchangeable concepts revolved around the five pillars of action and the six foundations of belief. When Islam and iman are mentioned together in the same place, then Islam refers to the outward actions and iman refers to the inward beliefs.
Belief manifests itself. The scholars say that a belief lives in the heart and shows itself on the actions and on the tongue. For example, the Prophet (sas) said that the Muslim is the person who the people are safe from his hands and his tongue. And the believer is the one who people trust him with their wealth and themselves.

The Big Three: Islam, Iman, & Ihsan

Scholars consider Islam, Iman and Ihsan the three stages in the path towards Allah (swt). The first path is you force yourself and bring yourself to do those actions which you know that Allah wants you to do. The second level is iman where you are not only doing those actions, but you are strengthening your relationship with Allah (swt) and you’re beginning to taste the sweetness of your relationship with Allah. The third level is the level of Ihsan, which is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and even if you cannot see Him, to know that He sees you. So, you are moving in this path, this journey, towards the Divine. And in doing so, it’s getting more and more intense.

The Hour

When Jibreel asked the Prophet (sas) about the hour, He said, “The one who is being asked about it is not more knowledgeable about it than the one who is asking.” Here, the Prophet (sas) is saying, this is something that Allah (swt) keeps to Himself and it is part of the “ghayb” (unseen). This is an important lesson because it doesn’t matter when the Day of Judgment is, what really matters is what and how we are preparing for it. We should be continuously striving to please Allah and seek his forgiveness.

The Signs

The next question was, “So, tell me about it’s signs, tell me about the things that will occur”. These signs are considered as warnings. The Prophet (sas) gave two signs to this particular hadith of the end of time. One of them is, “the slave woman will give birth to her master,” and the tense is feminine so it is referring to her female master.
One of the interpretations that relates to modern time would be: The one who gives birth is supposed to be in power, or have some sort of level or authority over the one who she gives birth to. But this here is a flipping of the scale. The one who gives birth becomes the servant of the one who is born. Whereas before, the child would respect, honor and listen to their parents. Now it’s the complete opposite, and if you look around, you will see it. You see and feel as if the parents are slaves to the children. Parents desperately trying to please their children, and moms are trying to imitate their daughters.
The second sign; is the person will see barefooted, lightly dressed, and poor people who are shepherds. They will see these people competing with one another in their buildings. The point here is you have these people who don’t have anything, they are very poor. Then suddenly the situation changes for them, and they are competing with one another over who can build the tallest building. They are competing to see who has the nicest car, the latest gadgets, etc.

Bounty of Allah

In the end, all of this is from the blessings of Allah (swt). Allah (swt) gives us so much and rather than being humble and grateful in front of Allah, we are arrogant and think that it is all from us. Righteousness, putting full effort and trying one's best will all eventually lead to success and wealth. But at the end of the day, we still have to acknowledge that no matter how much effort we put in, our wealth and success will always be in the hands and bounty of Allah. So, being successful and having wealth should give us more reasons to increase our humility and increase our gratitude towards our Lord.

Haqq Dawah Media Presents: Glad Tiding Season 2 Episode 8 Characteristics of a Muslim (Show Notes)

AsSalaam Alkuim,

This is your Bro.Kareem from the Haqq Dawah Grp, this is Haqq Dawah Media Presents: Glad Tidings Season 2 Episode 8 Characteristics of a Muslim.

In this episode we will cover good characteristics that every Muslim should have. These are characteristics that if implemented will make any Muslim a better Muslim. Like anything you are not expected to have all of them right away, but you should strive to gain each one of them.

1. Fearful of Allah (Taqwa)
“This is the book: in it is guidance sure, without doubt to those who fear Allah.” Surah 2

Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Fear Allah wherever you are. Follow up a bad deed with a good deed and it will blot it out. And deal with people in a good manner.” [ Sunan al-Tirmidhî ]

Taqwa essentially is to protect self from punishment of ALLAH by obeying HIS orders and by abstaining from what HE has prohibited.
He who fears ALLAH SWT and acts according to HIS instructions will be secured from HIS punishment.

2. Truthfulness

“O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and speak straight, true words” 33:70

“Verily, truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man may speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as truthful. Verily, falsehood leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man may tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
Muslim

Being truthful is one of the necessities of a human society, one of the virtues of human behaviour, and brings great benefits, whilst lying is one of the major elements of corruption in human society, and the cause of the destruction of social structure and ties, one of the most evil features of bad conduct, and causes widespread harm. Hence Islam commanded truthfulness and forbade lying. Islamqa.com:

3. Sincerity (Ikhlas)

“It is most hateful in the sight of Allah that you say things which you do not do”. 61:3

The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “Ad-Deen is sincerity”. We said: “For whom?” He replied, “For Allah, His Book, His Messenger and for the leaders of the Muslims and their masses”
(Muslim)
Sincerity is a crucial element of repentance and salvation in Islam.Sincerity before Allah is associated with faithfulness in Islam. It is one of the most important criteria Allah uses to judge the state of an individual's heart.

4. Humility

“ The  servants of the Beneficent are those who walk on the earth in humility.” 25:63

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Allah has revealed to me that you must be humble towards another.”
Muslim

Islam highly commends humbleness and simplicity and reckons that as one of the traits of a true believer, the people of truth. Humility is a blessing from Allah.

5. Patience (Sabr)

“Allah loves those who patient” 3:145

The Prophet (SAW) said, "The real patience is at the first stroke of a calamity."
Bukhari
Believing in the preordainment is one of the pillars of faith. This entails absolute contentment with what befalls one, this belief helps the believer accept whatever befalls him. A believer knows that whatever happened to him was an act of God that no one can evade.
6. Honesty

“O you who believe!  Fear God, and be with those who are true (in word and deeds).” 9:119

“Lying is wrong, except in three things: the lie of a man to his wife to make her content with him; a lie in war, for war is deception; or a lie to settle trouble between people”
Ahmad

Islam commands all Muslims to be honest. To be honest to themselves as well as others. This is attached to sincerity.

7. Purity and cleanliness (Tahara)

“He indeed is successful who purifies himself  (in mind and body), and remembers the name of his Lord, then prays. 87 14-15

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Purity is half of faith, and the praise of Allah fills the scale. Glorification and praise fill up what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light, charity is proof, and patience is illumination. The Quran is a proof for you or against you. All people go out early in the morning and sell themselves, either setting themselves free or destroying themselves.”Muslim
When speaking about purity and cleanliness is not just your clothes and where you  physical are. It includes your walk, the way you talk and also your thoughts. This also is what you eat. Cleanliness is broken into two parts.
Inner tahara can be achieved by upholding the five pillars of Islam, having clean and pure thinking process, avoiding sins, making a lot of dikar and especially making sure the heart is pure of spiritual maladies such as anger, hatred, relying on other than Allah, fear of loss of provision, antipathy toward death, wantonness, pride, arrogance, riya, etc
Outer tahara can be attained by proper bodily purification e.g. making wudu (ablution), taking bath, cleaning teeth, using fragrance or perfumes, keeping house and clothes clean etc.  alquranclasses.com
8. Respectful
O YOU who have attained to faith! Do not say [to the Prophet], "Listen to us," but rather say, "Have patience with us," and hearken [unto him], since grievous suffering awaits those who deny the truth.2:104
Anas ibn Malik reported: One day I was serving the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When I thought I had finished serving him, I said, “The Prophet is having a midday nap.” So I left him and there were some children playing. I stood looking at them and their game. The Prophet came out, and he came to them and greeted them with peace. Then he called me and sent me to get something he needed. He remained in the shade until I came back to him. I was late for my mother and she asked, “What kept you?” I replied, “The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent me for something he needed.” She asked, “What was it?” I replied, “It is a secret of the Prophet.” She said, “Keep the secret of the Messenger of Allah.” I did not tell anyone that secret and if I were to tell it, I would have told her. Bukhri
There is a saying is Islam to respect your elders and the ones younger than you. With that said, it shows Islam's drive to respect all humans.

9. Reliance on Allah (Tawakkul)

Put your trust in Allah. Allah loves those that trust [in Him]. 3:159

“If you had all relied on Allah (SWT) as you should rely on Him, then He would have provided for you as He provides for the birds, who wake up hungry in the morning and return with full stomachs at dusk.” Tirmidhi

Tawakkul is a light for our hearts and a means for us to seek nearness towards Allah (SWT) in a manner that absolutely nothing else can achieve. The essence of this quality of the heart is built upon two very important pillars: dependence upon Allah and trust in Allah. islamicity.com

10. Tawhid

And your Allah is One Allah. There is no god but He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. 2:163

Allah. There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal. 3:3

He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. 3:6
The Prophet(ﷺSAW) said, "O Mu`adh! Do you know what Allah's Right upon His slaves is?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet (SAWﷺ) said, "To worship Him (Allah) Alone and to join none in worship with Him (Allah). Do you know what their right upon Him is?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet (ﷺSAW) said, "Not to punish them (if they do so). Bukhari

Is the first and paramount constituent of the Islamic concept. Without this in your heart you can not be a Muslim. The belief that Allah is One and has no kinship. He needs no help or has any,

What is Sunnah?

What is Sunnah?

AsSalaam Alkuim,

Sunnah is the name given to the deeds of the Prophet apart from fard ( a religious duty commanded by Allah) and wajib(an obligatory act, with failure to perform it being sinful) that he himself did, that he told others “to do” and that he consented to. Sunnahs are classified under the heading of “supererogatory”

Sunnahs are divided into two:
1 – Sunnah al-muakkada,
2 – Sunnah ghayr muakkada.

 Sunnah al-Muakkada:
They are the sunnahs that our Prophet generally did but rarely abandoned. It means strong sunnah; like the sunnah prayers of the morning, noon and evening prayers. Sunnahs like adhan, iqamah, praying in congregation, which are regarded as fundamentals of Islam, are sunnah al-muakkada. They are also calledsunnah al-Huda

 Sunnah Ghayr Muakkada:
They are the sunnahs that the Messenger of Allah sometimes did with the intention of worshipping and sometimes abandoned; like the first sunnah prayers of the afternoon and night prayers.

The normal daily activities of the Messenger of Allah like eating, drinking, dressing, sitting, standing and his deeds relating to the good manners are included in Sunnah ghayr muakkada. They are also called Sunnah az-zawaid.
The sunnah also has parts like ayn and kifaya just like fard. For instance, performing itikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan, performing the tarawih prayer in congregation, performing tarawih with khatm are sunnah al-kifaya. Performing fard prayers in congregation are sunnah al-ayn.
