What are Jinns?
Jinns are beings created by Allah that have free will, similar to mankind. Unlike mankind Jinns cannot be seen by normal human eyes. Jinn is from the Arabic verb Jinna which means conceal or hide. Being that they are invisible, acknowledgement of their existence is a matter of eman (belief), as they are mentioned frequently in the Quran.
“Indeed We created man from dried clay of black smooth mud. And We created Jinn before that from smokeless flame of fire.” Quran 15:26-27
The Jinns were created after the angels and before mankind. There are Jinns who are Muslim and non Muslim. Jinns also have families. They eat, sleep, drink, have children and die. The life span of a Jinn is a lot longer than that of the human being. Jinns will also stand before their Creator on the Day of Judgement and will be held accountable for their actions, the same as mankind.
Shaytan (commonly know as the devil) is a Jinn, who disobeyed Allah’s commandment to bow down to Adam. (refer back to the section on Angels.) The story of the Shaytan (iblis) is found several times in the Quran.
Jinns are usually invisible to humans, but can see humans clearly. Jinns cannot harm Muslims who seek Allah’s protection against them. This will be covered in a later show. It is said that Jinn have the power to travel long distance at extreme speeds and live in areas man cannot reach normally. Some of these areas are mountain tops, in the seas, on trees and in the air. They live in communities of their own.
